The Exact Number of Reps You Need to Define Your Abs Is…

by America's Baby Boomer Fitness Expert, Stephen Holt

waistTape2 Finally – here it is. The exact number of reps you need to do to finally get the six pack abs you’ve always wanted.

You probably started with just 20 reps of crunches – but you weren’t seeing the results you wanted.

So you jumped up to 30 reps – still with no results, though.

Then 50 reps. And guess what? No results.

So, finally you made it up to 100 reps. Surely 100 crunches would give you the abs you want. Right?

Hmm. That didn’t work either.

Do you see a pattern here?

There are several problems with this line of “thinking” …

First, let’s talk about numbers of reps for bodyweight exercises like crunches.

I see this every day and still don’t understand why (and how) some trainers and group ex instructors give the same “magic number” of reps to person after person.

You see, traditional crunches use a portion of your upper body weight as resistance. Someone with a large upper body will have greater resistance while someone with a smaller upper body will have less resistance.

So an Abs Class full of 30 people will have 30 (at least slightly) different upper body weights. And these 30 people will definitely have different exercise histories and different abdominal endurance levels.

So why does the ex-football player with a huge upper body, great abdominal endurance, and extensive history of doing crunches get assigned the same number of reps as someone with a small upper body, sporadic history of exercise, and low abdominal endurance?

Personal fitness trainers tend to fall in love with a certain number of crunches and all their clients all day long do the same magic number of reps. Ms. Jones, the former college tennis player who still exercises at a high level every day gets the same number of reps as Ms. Smith who just started exercising last week.

It sure doesn’t make sense to me. How ’bout you?
